Holiday Orders Closed

Dear friends,

Our macaron baker is on strike until December 26th!  We are still checking our email (Mesdames.des.macarons@gmail.com) though, in case some of you want to place orders for New Year's Eve events!

In the mean time, the only place you might be able to grab a macaron or two is from Gustare Oils & Vinegars in Mashpee Commons after 1pm today.  There is a very limited supply, and there have been many inquiries in the store as to the presence of macarons this weekend.  Perhaps we'll see you there!

Merci,
Les Mesdames!

Frequently Asked Questions - Question 1, 2 and 3

1. How do you pronounce Mesdames des Macarons?

Our company name is pronounced may-daam day mac-a-rON.  Basically, you should not pronounce any of the s's in our name.

2. What does Mesdames des Macarons Mean?

It is French for "The Macaron Ladies"

3. Who are the Macaron Ladies?

Katy is the Macaron Lady.  She runs the show from updating the blog and facebook page, to baking, to arranging deliveries and networking.  So shouldn't the business be called The Macaron Lady?  Maybe, but without the constant help and inspiration of her friends Michelle, Liz and Erin, there would never have been a business in the first place.  Michelle also helps run the websites and sell macarons at fairs.  Erin is a qualified bow-tier, and Liz came up with the name in the first place!

More Frequently Asked Questions will appear on our blog, and be added to the FAQ tab at the side bar on our website.

Do you have any questions for us?  Leave a comment or email us and we'll answer them.

Sharing Special Moments

Bon jour!  Of late, most of our entries on this blog have been purely promotional.  Other than the matching Facebook status updates, Les Mesdames don't have many opportunities or avenues for communicating with our friends and fellow fans of les macarons.  How else are you supposed to know what flavors are available and how to order them?

As useful as the blog has been for promoting our little (tiny) business, as the owner/co-founder/primary baker, I think it would be interesting and insightful for you if I took a little time every week to share what's going on behind the scenes of Mesdames des Macarons.

It would seem an awfully cumbersome time of year to begin a regular blog post ritual; however, I find I accomplish so much more this time of year than any other.  My mind and body are turned up all the way to maximum in order to keep in step with all of the email orders flooding in, and the requests coming in from Gustare guests for more flavors and more volume of macarons for sale.

My main reason for starting the blog today, though, is much simpler.  Today, for the first time this season, I had a taste of my own creations.  While I unpacked the little three-piece packs I brought into Gustare to sell, I took up a pack that contained Pistachio Hazelnut, Chocolate Orange, and Lemon Zest.  The little pack called out my name in a whisper.  How could I resist?  Really?  So a cup of tea later, I was savoring the soft cakey texture of the Chocolate Orange macaron like never before.

Amidst the storm of baking I do this time of year, I very rarely take a moment out of my time, and even more rarely do I take a macaron out of a batch.  So sitting down with a macaron in the middle of the day was a treat.

It was in that moment that I decided, you know what, I should share these moments with you.  Shouldn't I?  And what better way than to open my kitchen door and let you in a little.  We'll explore the process of macaronage a little at a time.  I'll share joint pain stories and sweet moments of macaron-inspired happiness.

I would also like to invite you, my friends, to share your stories.  You are welcome to leave comments on this blog or email us at Mesdames.des.macarons@gmail.com to share your stories and special moments.  Pictures are, of course, welcome too.

Until next week then.

A bientot!
Katy

Good enough for the Bride!

Mesdames had the great honor of providing the crowning jewels of confectionery delight in a Bride's dream wedding.  During the cocktail hour, guests got to indulge in this rainbow of sweet flavored macarons...

While a few mesdames were at the wedding location we made friends with a friendly old dog named Lego.  Katy and Lego became quite good friends.

A perfect end to a lovely summer!

The Olympic Spirit

It would be quite a stretch to try to recreate the city of London or the 2012 Olympic logo in macaron form, so we stuck with the most circular of Olympic iconography: the rings.

Our five rings are made up of Blueberry Velvet (blueberry shells with silky cream cheese frosting), Nutmeg and Black current, Red Raspberry, Lemon Zest, and Limeade.

Each set of Olympic Spirited Macarons (5 pieces) is available throughout the 2012 Olympic Games while supplies last.  Each box is $10.  Email mesdames.des.macarons@gmail.com to order yours, and let us know if you'd rather pick it up at Gustare Olive Oils in Mashpee, or at Idgy's in Yarmouth.

Bon apetit and let the games begin!

Learning to make Macarons

Brother and sister team, Anthony and Lexi, came over to baker/owner Katy's home kitchen to test their French baking skills.  Both Anthony and Lexi are fans of Mesdames des Macarons and often get treated to some of Katy's stranger experiments when she gets invited over to birthday parties and sports events.

Lexi has expressed desire to work in a bakery.  She says she even tried to make cupcakes for a family friends' business once, but it "didn't go so well".  At 12 years old, she still has time to learn all the best baking tricks.  Anthony shares his father's love of cooking and trying new things.  Since both of them have expressed interest in learning to make macarons, Katy invited the two over and here are some of the results from their very first attempt at the tricky French pastry:

Here's betting your first batch wasn't any prettier!  The shells came out smooth, pink, and cakey on the inside.  We can't ask for anything better than that from a first attempt (you can see Katy's first batch in pictures here).

First, the team measured out all of their ingrediants, and Lexi decided on the color pink.  Anthony got to do all of the mixing of the batter, so Lexi had the hard task of piping the batter out into circles on parchment paper.

She got progressively better with each one.

While waiting for the shells to mature before baking them, Anthony and Lexi took up the mini challenge of folding our boxes.  It turned out a lot harder than you'd think.

Each paper-full of shells has to bake by itself in the oven, so in between taking finished shells out of the oven and putting new ones in to bake, we had time for a few quick questions.
Mesdames Des Macarons:  What’s your favorite flavor?Lexi: raspberry, no strawberry, yeah raspberryAnthony: (after much deliberation) butter!
MDM: What were the first macarons you tasted?Lexi: chocolate.Anthony: freaky flavor... (Katy experimented with guava fillings. Once.)

MDM: What other baking experience do you have?Lexi: a lot, like cakes, cupcakes, and stuff.Anthony: I cook a lot of  differnt food at home.
MDM: What’s your favorite thing to make?
Lexi: cakes!
Anthony: I make really good chili.
MDM: If you could own  your own store, what would it be called and what would you sell?
Lexi: Purple Pandas – selling cupcakes and cake and cookies and tea and coffee.
Anthony: (shruggin) Le Boulangerie.  I don’t know, something French.
MDM: What was the hardest thing about making macarons for the first time?
Lexi: For me, piping them was hard.  It was hard to squeeze the stuff out.
Anthony: Waiting. And making the boxes.
MDM: Obviously, I’m a good teacher, right? (asked by Katy)Lexi and Anthony in unison: mmhmmn (shaking their heads yes).
Katy: Good answer!

Then when it came to filling finished shells with Rose fused White Chocolate and Raspberry Cream Cheese Frosting, everyone got serious (and a little sticky).

It was all a lot of work, but both bakers showed off their talents!  We've definitely stumbled upon some future employees here!

Merci to Anthony and Lexi for cleaning up all the dirty dishes after baking.  And thanks to their Dad for bringing them over on a school night!

And what better way to begin this year than to find ourselves in the pages of Cape Cod Magazine?

Thank you to all who have supported us so far.  We are continuing to learn and grow, and your encouragement and support is our fuel.  Merci Bocu, and Happy New Year.
